It happened. It's real.  In the immortal words of the arena announcer following the Hurricanes' 5-1 drubbing of the Lightning:  "The winners... and NEWWWWWW NSHL BELT Champions ... the Carolina Hurricanes!!!!"

The Hurricanes completed their journey after an impressive round-robin  during NSHLX - The Extended Version, they marched through the tournament rounds and absolutely crushed the Lightning in the final Best-of-Three.  Over two games Carolina scored 10 goals and allowed only 1.

"I am so happy to have come here today. This victory, this is a load off my mind. The boys really got me where I wanted to be today, where I wanted US to be and now we're going to go into the locker room together and we'll #StrapItOn and celebrate with a little bit of the bubbly!" Hurricane GM Hamm told reporters during the on-ice celebration.

The tournament win gives the Hurricanes a huge momentum boost heading into the season, but that's when the real games get played and a failure to climb higher using that momentum could negate the overall impact of this victory.

Meanwhile in the MSHL, the Rochester Americans bounced back in Game Two and will force a deciding Game Three back in Braapton on Wednesday.

Team Russia Goes Home Early

One of the overwhelming potential favourites for the #NSHLWorldCup is heading home after a disappointing round-robin. Team Russia, led by import GM Emile Leeanan finished dead last in Group D, the European Division and 9th on their side of the bracket.

Masked Russian supporters in the stands booed the team off the ice in their final game, a 4-2 loss to the Czech Republic.

A Russian website posted a blurb calling for an inquiry into the state of Russian hockey and called the performance "abysmal". President Putin was quoted as saying "We should own the Czechs. No, seriously we must OWN them. How we lose?"

How do you lose? Ovechkin had 0 points and everyone besides the first line was like their former President, Mikhail garbage(ov).

GM Leeanan is not expected to be invited back to Moscow anytime soon, which is likely ideal considering where he left their beloved hockey team.


BoD Meets to Decide Future re: NHL Season

The NSHL's Board of Directors met recently to discuss the future of the NSHL as it relates to tying into whatever NHL season may or may not be played in 2021.

The result?

The Board agreed that the NSHL will continue on as scheduled following NSHLX with a full NSHL regular season schedule.  Provided the NHL can complete at least 40 regular season games, NHL-based ratings would occur pro-rated as though an 82 game season had been played.

Without the minimum of 40 games played, the NSHL will not introduce NHL-based ratings following NSHL20 and will instead have to rely only on internal re-rates for player rating change.

The future of the NSHL Draft structure will depend on the NHL's lead, however the Board fully expects a standard NSHL Draft at some point in time down the road following NSHL20.


NSHLX Medal Round Format Unveiled

The medal round portion of this year's extended pre-season has been unveiled and will allow for all 22 teams to potentially participate in the fight for the NSHLX title. And for the first time in league history, that X title comes with a belt: the #NSHLBelt (in addition to $2.5M cash).

Upon conclusion of the round-robin schedule the league is currently playing through, the top seven (7) teams in each division will qualify for the medal round.

In each division the last place team (#11) will play the second last place team (#10) in the first qualifier. The winner will play team #9 in the division in the second qualifier. The winner of THAT will play the #8 team to make it into the medal round.

The medal round will be a divisional best-versus-worst tournament featuring a Best-of-Three in each round.

Once only one team stands per division the X Finals will take place with home-ice going to the team with the best X record during the round robin.

Reminder: This Year's ODW Changes

Earlier on this off-season the league made some changes that should impact the decision making that goes into teams' decisions on who they place on their Opening Day Waivers (ODW) list.

For one, there's the $500,000 fee..

The first minor change was an increase to the transaction fee associated with making a claim off ODW. The cost per claim goes up $500,000 from the $100,000 it used to be and is the standard waiver fee.

This change was made to ensure teams were properly compensated for a player they lose or perhaps, punish teams who are just claiming for the sake of claiming as they will pay 5x the standard fee.  If a claiming team adds a player through ODW and quickly waives him for their own roster they could then lose him for the standard $100,000 waiver fee, plus the additional $400,000 loss they take from what they paid for him originally.

And don't sleep on MSHL Playoff eligibility

Any non-IIHF player that is 25 years of age or older must be placed on an Opening Day Waivers list to be eligible to play in the MSHL post Trade Deadline (includes the Playoffs).  That's it.  That's the rule.

All teams are now required to contingency plan for their MSHL future and truly contemplate who they may rely on if their MSHL team makes a run for the post-season.

The player on ODW does NOT have to be claimed.  The player on ODW does not even have to start the year in the MSHL.  BUT should the need or preference arise for the player to be part of any sort of post-deadline MSHL Playoff run, he needs to have be on an ODW list. 

On repeat:  the only way for a 25+ year old (non-IIHF) player can play in the MSHL following the Trade Deadline is for their name to be listed on ODW (claimed or unclaimed does not matter).

This does NOT mean said player is exempt for regular season waivers leading up to the Deadline.  Those rules still apply. 

After the Trade Deadline, anyone 25+ can move freely to the MSHL provided they were on an ODW list.  No waivers required.

Per the NSHL Rulebook players under 25 are eligible to play in the MSHL following the Trade Deadline assuming they have fewer than 20 games played in the Pros (10 for goalies).

What does this mean for ODW lists in general?

Who knows if it changes anything, really. 

It probably should mean there are more players listed than normal as GMs attempt to cover all their bases in ensuring MSHL post-season eligibilty for themselves, but also adding potential trade value to assets they currently hold that could be of value to someone else for an MSHL run.

In the past GMs have tried to bury players they really wanted to pass through ODW by adding bigger names.  Some teams have outright passed on their ODW selection or moved it in a trade.

Now with just about everyone on the prowl, perhaps the value of an ODW just increased as there are only 22 claims available after all...

A deadline for ODW lists will be set later in the pre-season so teams still have plenty of time to gameplan. The league is NOT accepting ODW lists yet.


NSHL20 Training Camp - NOW OPEN!

All teams are now eligible to begin submitting their Training Camp (TC) point allotments to the league e-mail.

Teams are required to include in their e-mail FULL PLAYER NAME, RATING CATEGORY, CURRENT RATING, TC PTS APPLIED, NEW RATING. To make it easier for the league, all GMs are asked to compile their TC point requests into one e-mail and ideally use a simple spreadsheet / chart.

The Commissioner will be updating player ratings over time this pre-season and same day updates for TC points are not guaranteed (they can take time). All GMs can be assured their requests will be completed prior to Opening Day.

All teams have the standard 25 Training Camp Points to work with. Teams that have earned and submitted for additional points will find those points tallied on the Futures page and listed as Prospects.

All Training Camp point requests must followed the guidelines in the NSHL Rulebook found in Dropbox.

Teams have until the last day of the NSHLX round-robin schedule to get their submissions in. This is a KEY DEADLINE and missing it can impact a team's ability to earn TC Points in the future.


The Future of the NSHL Training Camp

For years the NSHL has held off-season Training Camps in every market as a way to help improve player abilities over time.

As the idea evolved, the league helped grow the "Training Camp" concept by adding points per team (from 20 to 25) and even allowing wealthy (large market) teams the opportunity to be rewarded in points rather than cash.

All-in-all the Training Camp concept is popular and has improved a number of players throughout its history.

Training Camp points have always been awarded to each team in the off-season without cost or burden.  That is, until now.

For next off-season (following NSHL20), Training Camp points will only be awarded to teams that have made key deadlines throughout the year. 

The Commissioner's office sets several deadlines throughout the year (including, ironically, for Training Camp points to be due). These are never onerous, "due tomorrow" deadlines, however they are often overlooked by some. TC Points, Opening Day Waivers, PSC names, All-Star and Award voting, etc.

Training Camp Points are a luxury to be earned, so the league will be awarding them to those who earn them going forward.

A GM can miss ONE deadline before losing their Training Camp Points privilege. 

The league will guarantee key deadlines are clearly stated via e-mail and will offer at least a 48 hour window for deadline completion.  GMs that have made it clear they are going to be MIA during a potential deadline will be handled on a case by case basis and should find a "buddy" in the league to help them as required (and as we've done for years).

The Commissioner's office will also be taking Auto Roster and Auto Line numbers into account at the end of the year.  The top two (2) teams in "Auto" reliance will also be at risk of losing their Training Camp Points.

Training Camp points for this off-season are the same as they've always been.  Details on using those is expected to be released this weekend. 


The #NSHLBelt: The Sky Is Falling The Limit!

Since the details of the #NSHLBelt were initially released last week the feedback has been incredible and there have already been a lot of ideas on to improve.  A couple of those ideas were so good that they needed to be implemented immediately and re-shape the original concept (for the better).

Please note that the original post for the #NSHLBelt will remain up for anyone who wants to compare & contrast where we were and how it's going, but the outline below is the new base.

One of key reasons the above changes was made was to keep the ball rolling along once a Champion is crowned and to force teams to play more difficult opponents rather than picking on the weak.  The #NSHLBelt title defences are automatic based on the schedule so teams have to defend or play their #NSHLChicken card strategically.

Bring on the #NSHLBelt

The NSHL pre-season is underway and has been extended due to these uncertain times.  This year, every team in #NSHLX will play a 20 game schedule over the course of approximately 2 months.  Following that, teams will enter a knockout tournament to determine the X Champion.

For the first time ever (!!), the results of #NSHLX will determine a 7th Round draft order for the next #NSHLDraft with X Champion receiving the first pick in the round (and with 2nd going 2nd and so on).  This helps give this extended pre-season some added meaning.

In addition to a draft pick, the league has confirmed that the #NSHLX Champion will be awarded the newly created #NSHLBelt which the Commissioner's office unveiled earlier this off-season, as well as $2,500,000 cash.

Along with the glory of being the #NSHLX Champion comes tremendous expectation and responsibility.

CONFIRMED:  X-tended Pre-Season Schedule

"It's a no brainer, really." the Commissioner told reporters following the league announcement on Sunday that an extended pre-season schedule was in the works and nearly ready.

The NSHL20 pre-season will be a 20 game schedule where teams play a home game and an away game against each other team in their division. Following that there is expected to be a "medal round" tournament to determine the X Champion.

"We're obviously in unprecedented times and while we wait for the NHL to get their house in order, the one way to keep the ball rolling for our league is to have more games, even if they don't feel as meaningful. We do believe, with a few slight tweaks that this extended pre-season will be meaningful and more than just a time filler." the Commissioner added.

The league indicated that "meaningful" meant something to play for, and the feeling is they're doing just that.

The results of the pre-season will indicate a draft order for a 7th round in next year's NSHL Draft, with the winner taking top pick, the runner-up second and so on down the line. All picks will be added to each team's Futures list and may be treated like any other asset once the pre-season is complete.

Additionally, the Commissioner announced that the X Champion would be awarded the first ever NSHL Title Belt. While he didn't go into much detail he hinted that details would be released "soon".

The league expects the pre-season will commence later in the week so teams should begin reviewing their NSHL and MSHL rosters and lines. A reminder that there are no Waivers or money earned or lost in the pre-season and that games played do not impact rookie or rating status in any way.


A Moment of (IIHF) Clarity

The NSHL formally announced on Thursday that it would be eliminating the "IIHF Contract" effective NSHL21. There has been quite a bit of confusion surrounding who is and who is not eligible and the change will hopefully clarify things for everyone.

Going forward a 25+ year old player will be eligible to be signed to a contract as an unrestricted free agents provided they meet three simple criteria:

#1 They have a rating in the NSHL.

#2 They are not retired.

#3 They have stats on HockeyDB that match the same year as to when the signing takes place (i.e. a player signed in 2020 will have to have HockeyDB stats from the 2019-20 season OR the 2020-21 season).

The league will continue to actively pursue removing inactive free agents in the off-season, however will begin pushing the onus back on GMs to do their own research. 

"The NSHLPA will include the requirement for a player's HockeyDB link to be included in their UFA submission form.  If you copy and paste the link, you can surely take three seconds to review their stats." a league source reported.

In addition to clarifying the matter at hand, having IIHF players eligible for the NSHL in addition to the MSHL may increase ice-time for younger players in the MSHL who may otherwise be stuck behind older more experienced players who were previously on one-way contracts.

"IIHF or not, next year you'll be able to qualify for a regular contract, go through regular waivers, etc.  It should really help clean up the whole process."  the Commissioner said in his official release.

The two Stanley Cup Finalists from NSHL19 recently got together via Zoom to hold the off-season Division Draft to determine where teams would play in the upcoming season.

As is now tradition, the defending Champions got first pick in the non-snaked draft to determine NSHL20 alignment.

Following both drafts it was made apparent that four of the league's 22 GMs view the Carolina Hurricanes and the expansion St. Louis Blues as the "most favourable" teams to have in their division with an average selection at spot 1.5. The New York Rangers were viewed as the "least favourable" team with an average selection at spot 9.5.


Team Emile-Ray Win The Tag Tournament!

With a little under three and a half minutes left in a 1-1 game, Team Emile-Ray's Nazem Kadri deflected a shot by Mikko Rantanen, past the outstretched glove of John Gibson to give the team the lead. Less than a minute later Alex DeBrincat would make a crucial shot block to help preserve the lead and the Tournament win.

The victory caps off an improbable run by Team Emile-Ray whose situation looked dire as the Round Robin wound down. With a hot streak initiated at exactly the right time, they would upset all three opponents faced in the Playoff Round on their way to capturing the Tag Tournament Championship.

Next week, all the high fiving and ass kissing goes away as the second part of the Tournament gets under way. This portion is expected to take place beginning on Tuesday.

As a reminder, all teams separate and square-off in a Best-of-Three series to determine who takes the lion's share of the winnings (or owes a bigger portion of the collective debt).

The Goalie Fix Is In

"It's a start."

On Monday afternoon the Board of Directors confirmed a couple of rulebook upgrades to improve on the league's ongoing lack of goaltending depth ahead of NSHL20.

The Commissioner admitted "we're trying our best to increase our depth in all positions but it's not easy.  We've started with trying to get more goalies available to teams and have them dispersed a little more evenly to combat the shortage we've seen in previous seasons." 

The NHL Re-Rate Option

The first change is significant and allows for a goalie still under his entry level deal to be re-rated to his NHL-based rating. The only requirement aside from being under his ELC deal is that the player may not have played for a team other than the team that signed him to the ELC to begin with.

After much deliberation the Board agreed that more and more NHL goalies are hitting their primes in their late 20s.  The hope here is that a team doesn't have to force their goalies to sit on a Prospect List unused, waiting for a better rating down the road. 

This change enables a goalie to be signed and help alleviate the depth issue, while allowing his team a few more seasons to monitor his NHL rating and if necessary, they can elect to make the upgrade at no cost.

The re-rate will not impact the player's existing contract either as the Board confirmed an NHL re-rate used this way only impacts the goalie's ratings themselves and does not hit the team's pocket books.

"The NHL re-rated goalie will play out the remainder of his ELC at the amount he signed to. The hope here is the player gets better, sees more ice-time, provides value to the team and the league and will get a better payout over the course of the remainder of his career."

Limiting Goalie Adds in the Off-Season

The other significant change the Board has agreed to is to limit the amount of under contract goalies a team can carry in the off-season to six.

The Board believes this change will encourage teams to not "hoard" goalies and more teams can have the ideal 3 pro capable, 3 MSHL net-minders through the Opening Day Waiver (ODW) process.

Once Opening Day Waivers has completed, teams may add goalies and carry more than six under contract.
